Bright colour with a green hue, the wine has a wonderfully complex nose of fruit, oak and a slight “solids” character. The palate is all about balance and texture. Powerful chardonnay fruit is balanced well with the oak and the palate is kept fresh by a lively acid profile, a benefit of no malolactic fermentation.

Grape variety breakdown

The hand picked fruit was basket pressed in our original hand press and the juice was left to cold settle for 3 days The partially clear juice was then racked into another stainless steel tank where fermentation began and then, part way through ferment, the wine was transferred into French oak barriques where it completed fermentation and was matured for a further 9 months until bottling.

During the 1980s, Bruce Tyrrell convinced John Elliott to pull out the few acres of shiraz in the old Belford vineyard - it was light sandy soil and in wet vintages made ordinary red. The trade off for pulling it out was some chardonnay cuttings from the old HVD vineyard. For ten vintages, this chardonnay went into Vat 63 or Moon Mountain and from 2004, the Belford Chardonnay took on a life of its own.

Vintage Description

A late spring which led into cooler conditions throughout November and early December with good rain. This lead up left us with above average crop levels which ripened well with the long, cool weather conditions in January. Picking began one week later than 2011.
